Dynamic Lawyers featured in Globe and Mail

History of DL Comments Off

I’m pleased to announce that the Globe and Mail has released their article about Dynamic Lawyers, my pitch to CBC Dragon’s Den, and our Legal Forms + Video Guides! Here’s the link to the article:

Here’s the actual text of the article:

“Lawyer spins website for Dragons; Seeks venture capital to take do-it-yourself law site across country”

Michael Carabash, a Toronto lawyer touting a Web-based future of do-it-yourself law that he believes will transform the profession, has gone before the CBC’s panel of venture capitalists on the television show Dragons’ Den, looking for cash to expand his website across the country.

Mr. Carabash’s site, dynamiclawyers.com, offers legal forms such as contracts or wills for clients to download and fill out themselves, at what he says is a fraction of the cost of having them drafted by a conventional lawyer.

For example, a “cohabitational agreement” for couples planning to live together costs $97. The site also allows users to post legal questions, and have them answered by lawyers.

“Think of it as self-serve law,” says Mr. Carabash, who launched his website in 2008 and has promoted it since.

His inspiration is British author Richard Susskind’s book The End of Lawyers, which argues that technology will force a radical reorganization of the legal profession.

“Everything that he has written in his book is my game plan,” Mr. Carabash says, adding that he now gets all of his clients from his website.

Mr. Carabash said he couldn’t reveal whether he was able to win over the skeptical investors on Dragons’ Den. The episode is expected to air in the fall.

He said the show’s producers have also asked him to put on hold his proposed book about his experience on the show. He did say that he was still shopping for venture capital: “Regardless of what happens on Dragons’ Den, it was a great experience.”

Dragon’s Den Book…

History of DL Comments Off

I’ve decided to write another book.  But this one isn’t going to be about the law.  It’s going to be about CBC’s Dragon’s Den.  I want to take my experience – and the experience of others – and couple it with my legal and business knowledge in the context of a reality TV show (namely, CBC’s Dragon’s Den).  I’ve just started working on it and I think I’ll be done in a month or so.  I’m thinking 150 pages sounds right.  It’ll cover topics such as the show, the Dragons, pitching to CBC, pitching to the Dragon’s, and what happens if you get a deal.  Nothing has ever been done like this before and I think it will be a huge hit.  Now, if I can only find a publisher….

3 days left…before I face the dragons on CBC’s Dragon’s Den

History of DL Comments Off

I wanted to say thanks to family, friends, and clients for helping me to prepare for my CBC’s Dragon’s Den pitch this Saturday (May 1).  Many are nervous for me. Others congratulate me.  And many others have been offering their two cents on what I should say and how I should respond to their questions.  I’ll be featuring my legal forms + video guides business.   I feel that I will have been sufficient prepared to enter the Den.  Besides, I’ve appeared and made arguments before courts, tribunals, city council, school boards, TV, radio, etc.  How is this any different?  I think it should be fun.  Remember: it’s REALITY TV!

Access to Justice, History of DL Comments Off

WOW!  I just got the call from the producers at CBC.  Apparently, they liked my pitch and want me to be on DRAGON’S DEN for the upcoming season (which airs in the fall).  Very cool…  I’ll be pitching – what else – Legal Forms + Video Guides!  Lots to think about…lots to prepare…

DL Legal Forms + Video Guides on CBC Dragon’s Den Website

History of DL Comments Off

Next month, we’ll back to audition to be on CBC’s Dragon’s Den.  Gotta love that show!  I think that show, together with Shark Tank, Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares and Hell’s Kitchen (I love to cook if you haven’t guessed it) are the best business shows to watch.  That’s right: I said business.  There are so many important lessons about running an effective business which can be gleamed from those shows.  Yes, there’s drama and emotion and the reality of it all…but there’s also strategy, advice, and great ideas.   Anyways…I decided that I’m going to pitch the Legal Forms + Video Guides aspect of Dynamic Lawyers to the CBC producers in Toronto and see what happens…maybe they’ll like it enough to invite me to be on the show (Season 6)?

FYI, you can see our audition video here.  It’s temporarily on page 4 but will likely be pushed back a few pages once new auditions are added.

Dynamic Lawyers video for Dragon’s Den audition…

History of DL Comments Off

Michael CarabashSo I spent a good deal of my weekend coming up with a video pitch of Dynamic Lawyers for CBC’s Dragon’s Den.  I hope that, if they had any doubt before about selecting Dynamic Lawyers to be on the 4th season, this video will encouarge them to pick us for the next phase (i.e. filming).  So without further adieu, here’s our video introducing Dynamic Lawyers:

Dragon’s Den Videos…Time to whip one up!

History of DL 1 Comment »

Michael CarabashWith in-person auditions now closed for the 4th season of Dragon’s Den (the last one was in Toronto on April 18, 2009), the producers at CBC have some tough choices to make.  But the ability to submit your pitch isn’t over just yet: online video pitches are still being accepted until Monday, April 27, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.  This got me to thinking.  Sure, I think I had a great pitch to the CBC producers when they first started going around from one City to the next.  But what if they didn’t see the real “TV” potential and decided not to call me back?  Hmmm….Perhaps, as a means of last resort to get on the show, I should whip up a video in the next day or so that showcases the benefits of Dynamic Lawyers.  Besides, it makes for a fun and busy weekend since I’ve got relatives coming over (I’ll just involve them in the film and make them sign or acknowledge the necessary waivers and releases).  Now I just have to think up some scenario, cast some characters, start filming and then edit the whole thing.  It shouldn’t be too hard as I really liked doing this stuff during my M.B.A. courses at Schulich.  I’m thinking 1-2 minutes should be sufficed.  At the end of the day, I guess I needed a deadline of Monday at 5:00 p.m. as a challenge to see if I could pull it off.  After the video is ready to go, I can also post it here on the DL BLog and on YouTube.  All in all, a very good deal…so here I go and I’ll keep you posted…
